brain rot ft. Jackie Hayes

about

I remember staying with my friend Curtis Waters when I did the first couple sessions for the world is big, get over it EP. I think I recorded the early demo for brain rot on our third day of sessions and at that point I had got into the habit of playing Curtis and the other members of the house EP demos late at night when I’d return from the studio. I remember feeling a bit guarded about sharing this song with them because of how candid the lyrics were and how heavily I was leaning into a new much more tender style of singing. Naturally im hypercritical of my work but seeing folks crane their necks around the corridor to the living room to get a better listening vantage point, or noticing the sections of the song that made people wide-eyed and hold their breath, and hearing folks call this my “best vocal performance” really help tether me to this song. After those early sessions, months later when I was tying up the loose ends of the EP I was able to bring Jackie Hayes in for a session for brain rot and the rest was history. Being able to work on this song with Jackie Hayes was such a cyclical moment for me, growing up in Chicago Jackie Hayes was someone I had always admired and have been following for several years. So doing this song together feels like a way of validating my inner child and feels like a theme song for the city i grew up in.

lyrics

i think i’m up to something
these day are really something
Its deeper than the surface
Give me sometime its worth it
no sleep i’m always working
black eye its always hurting
teeth clenched im getting nervous
lock those feelings up and burn it

verse:
left home daily calls on the cell phone
23, i don’t really wanna get old
brick walls make your heart turn stone cold
brain rot think my heads starting to grow mold
and I dont, wanna live forever
and I dont, wanna die too young
If I, could change the weather
Id make it rain all damn day long
if you can’t take the pressure
then you cant the pressure
if you can’t take the pressure
then you cant the pressure

chorus:
i think i’m up to something
these day are really something
Its deeper than the surface
Give me sometime its worth it
no sleep i’m always working
black eye its always hurting
teeth clenched im getting nervous
lock those feelings up and burn it

chorus:
think i’m up to something
these day are really something
Its deeper than the surface
Give me sometime its worth it
no sleep i’m always working
black eye its always hurting
teeth clenched im getting nervous
lock those feelings up and burn it
